New Richmond
Both Native Americans and the French played large roles in the history of the New Richmond/Baldwin area. In the late 1680s, the St. Croix and St. Peter valleys officially became possessions of France. The Sioux and Chippewa tribes also resided in the area. At the time, there was heavy tension between the Native American tribes and settlers, so the region remained relatively unpopulated. In 1783, the French lost ownership of the land to the United States with the signing of the Peace of Paris. In 1837, the Sioux and Chippewa tribes also ceded their land to the United States. The prairie landscape was favorable to farmers and an agricultural community was quickly established. Today, St. Croix is still known for its dairy industry, an important source of income for local farmers.

In 1899, New Richmond was devastated by a cyclone which destroyed much of the city, including the entire business district. In the months that followed, citizens pulled together to rebuild. Much of the work in the business district was completed within six months. The area now displays an eclectic architectural charm from the combination of cyclone damage and subsequent rebuilds and remodels.

New Richmond was honored as “one of the eight great small towns to call home” by Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine. The city prides itself on its good schools, excellent health care and professional services, and growing industrial community. The New Richmond School District operates four schools, grades K-12. There are also several privately operated preschools and daycares. A parochial school offers education to students from preschool through eighth grade. Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in south New Richmond offers certificate and degree programs.

Baldwin is known as the “Biggest Little Town in Wisconsin.” One of the factors behind its nickname is the volume of mail that comes into to the Baldwin post office, which is tremendous relative to the population and the actual size of the community. Locals like to say that Baldwin earned this title because its residents are so friendly.

The town is supportive of new residential developments and new local businesses. Local businesses include financial institutions, professional services and retailers. The Main Street area is lined with gift stores, antique shops, a bakery, jewelers and a barbershop. There is also an industrial park and the Hillcrest Professional Building.

Located between Hudson and New Richmond is the town of Boardman. The community was named after the town’s first postmaster, Francis R. Boardman. Boardman offers residents the same quiet atmosphere and verdant surroundings as Baldwin and New Richmond.

Also located in this area of St. Croix County is Glenwood City, known as “The City With 57 Hills.” Glenwood City is home to just over 1,100 residents, who enjoy a small-town atmosphere amid rolling terrain and verdant scenery. In spite of its small size, this full-service community offers a number of amenities. Local students are served by the Glenwood City School District, which operates a high school and an elementary school. The Glenwood City Public Library offers further educational opportunities to residents of all ages.

Glenwood City offers plenty of services and attractions to residents. A variety of retail and service businesses, restaurants and cafes, and medical facilities are located along the city’s Main Street. Recreational offerings are plentiful as well, with tennis courts, a park with a swimming hole, and a golf course all located right in town. Another popular local recreational spot is Glen Lake.

Glenwood City hosts a number of exciting annual activities, including the St. Croix County Fair. This free event showcases thousands of exhibits and demonstrations, a carnival, live entertainment, tractor pulls, auctions and livestock shows. The city also hosts a PRCA pro rodeo event.

Another charming village in the area is Roberts -- “the Good Neighbor Community.” Roberts is located at the intersection of State Highway 65 and U.S. Highway 12. Like Glenwood City, Roberts is home to just over 1,000 residents. Local students attend schools within the St. Croix School System, which serves just 800 students. The village has its own police department, library and fire department.

Residents of New Richmond, Baldwin, Boardman, Glenwood City and Roberts have expansive parks and recreational opportunities. There are four municipal parks in Baldwin and several more in New Richmond. New Richmond operates the Friday Aquatic Center and the New Richmond Sports Center. In Baldwin, the Baldwin-Woodville School District operates an outdoor swimming pool. The communities also sponsor several events throughout the year including June Dairy Day, Windmill Days, Park Art Fest and Fun Fair.
